Cal Expo Racetrack

The California Exposition and State Fair, widely known as Cal Expo, was a premier 356-acre event facility located in Sacramento along the scenic banks of the American River. For decades, the site served as a central hub for the region's equestrian sports and cultural celebrations.

Historically, Cal Expo was the state's primary destination for harness racing. Operated by Capitol Racing, the venue hosted a robust racing schedule, which typically ran from January through July and returned for a fall/winter season from September/October through December. At its peak, the track was a vital component of the industry, where more than 900 horses competed throughout the racing year.

During the annual California State Fair, the track also showcased a variety of other racing disciplines, including thoroughbred, quarter horse, and Arabian racing. Over the years, Cal Expo became known for hosting several prestigious Stakes events, such as:

  • Governor's Handicap
  • Earlene McCabe Derby
  • CA State Fair Open Mule Challenge
  • Straight From The Gate Futurity
  • The Jack Clifford
  • The Hazel Lucas Stakes

In May 2025, Cal Expo officially ceased all harness racing operations, which marked the end of a long-standing tradition at the track. Despite the closure of the racing circuit, Cal Expo remained a key venue for the region. The facility continued to serve as the official home of the annual California State Fair and functioned as a premier destination for state-wide events, community festivals, trade shows, and major celebrations.
